Provider Assurance General Practice Services: Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD) Service Summary

Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD) is a non-compulsory method of dispensing prescriptions electronically. It means that patients who regularly get the same medicine do not need to visit their GP each time they need a repeat prescription. Instead, their prescription can be sent straight to the pharmacist for dispensing over a period of three, six or twelve months.

Who is Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD) For?

The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) supports ICBs to introduce eRD to their local practices through various reports highlighting where eRD might be appropriate, and provides ongoing support for roll out and general eRD queries from GPs.

Why is Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD) Important?

By adopting eRD in their regions, ICBs can support their local GPs to free up time usually taken by arranging repeat prescriptions. Dispensing electronically also supports patients by ensuring that they receive their medication in a timely and streamlined manner.
