HRT PPC now available to reduce the cost of HRT prescriptions
People paying HRT prescription charges could save money with the new NHS Hormone Replacement Therapy Prescription Prepayment Certificate (HRT PPC).
Introduced on 1 April 2023 by the Department of Health and Social Care, the HRT PPC covers an unlimited number of listed HRT medicines for 12 months, for the cost of two single prescription charges, currently £19.30.
According to the government, the HRT PPC could save around 400 thousand patients hundreds of pounds in prescription charges each year. Rather than paying £9.65 for each single HRT prescription, the HRT PPC will cover as many listed HRT items, including patches, tablets and gels, as they need throughout the year. How much they will save depends on the number of HRT prescriptions they need within 12 months.
The HRT PPC is available for all patients who are not already exempt from prescription charges, regardless of the reason the HRT item is prescribed.
People can buy the HRT PPC online at www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/hrt-ppc or in-person in some pharmacies.
Before buying an HRT PPC, they should check if:
- they’re eligible for free NHS prescriptions using the free NHS eligibility checker at www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/check
- their medicine is covered by the HRT PPC. For a list of medicines covered by the HRT PPC, visit www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/hrt-ppc-medicines
- a 3 or 12 month PPC is more suitable. It covers all NHS prescriptions, not just HRT items: www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/ppc
