NHS Business Service Authority (NHSBSA) shortlisted in two categories at the HSJ Awards 2020
The NHS Business Services Authority has been recognised for its commitment to environmental sustainability and high-quality communications at the HSJ Awards 2020 .

Digital Maternity Exemption Certificate Communications Campaign
Shortlisted for the NHS Communications Initiative of the Year Award
The new digital service was launched to make it easier and quicker for healthcare professionals to issue Maternity Exemption Certificates (Matex) to expectant and new mothers. Matex entitles pregnant women and women who have given birth in the last 12 months to get free NHS prescriptions and have proof of entitlement to free NHS dental treatment. It includes a self-registration function for midwives, reducing a 5-day wait to just a few minutes and saving time and money for the NHS, while ensuring mums-to-be receive their certificate instantly via email.
The targeted communications strategy via the press, social media and radio was critical to ensuring that health professionals, pregnant women and mums heard about the new digital service and understood the benefits, resulting in the gradual increase of digital certificates from 10% to over 50% within 12 months.

Shortlisted for the Environmental Sustainability Award
Environmental sustainability is critically important to the NHSBSA and championed by CEO, Michael Brodie. As an organisation delivering national services, many of which have traditionally been paper and plastic based, the NHSBSA has risen to the challenge of transforming the business and building a “digital first” approach to all service delivery. NHSBSA targets stretch much further than the mandated Greening Government targets, involving a redesign of the organisation’s working practices to deliver greener and more efficient services.

Now in its 40th year, the HSJ Awards is the largest annual benchmarking and recognition programme for healthcare. Through a rigorous, fair and transparent judging process the awards produce a roll call of the best organisations, teams and people in the NHS and the wider health sector.
This year’s awards ceremony will be held virtually on Wednesday 17th March 2021.
