NHSBSA extends 2019/20 voluntary scheme pays deadline for NHS Pension Scheme members with an annual allowance charge

To help support NHS Pension Scheme members who are continuing to deal with the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the NHSBSA has taken the decision to extend the voluntary scheme pays deadline for 2019/20.

Members of the NHS Pension Scheme with an annual allowance charge for 2019/20, who wish to use voluntary scheme pays to pay all or part of their annual allowance charge now have until 31 March 2022 to submit their application.

The NHSBSA does not have the authority to extend the mandatory scheme pays election deadline for 2019/20 as this is confirmed in legislation. The 2019/20 mandatory scheme pays deadline remains the 31 July 2021.

More information about mandatory and voluntary scheme pays, how to apply to use scheme pays and the deadlines for doing so can be found on the annual allowance webpage of the NHS Pension Member Hub.

The extended 2019/20 voluntary scheme pays deadline of the 31 March 2022 coincides with the deadline for clinicians applying to the 19/20 Pension Annual Allowance Charge Compensation Scheme. Clinicians who have an annual allowance charge for 2019/20 can find more information and the relevant application forms for the compensation scheme on the NHSEI website (for England) or NHS Confed website (for Wales).
