Working my way up – My progression to a Test Analyst
Avneet Jagpal, Test Analyst for the NHSBSA’s Digital team, shares her progression journey and the invaluable support she received to get there.
My journey with the NHSBSA began in January 2019 when I had joined as a Junior Tester. As a recent graduate, I was quite new to the processes, technologies and the world of testing and I soon realised that to fully understand the NHSBSA way of working, I had to go right back to basics and learn how to do things the ‘NHSBSA’ way. This really helped me to construct testing properly.
My colleagues, leads and managers were so supportive, sharing their experience and always giving me their time to learn, so I soon started to pick up the skills I needed and began to feel that I was really contributing.
Over time I have acquired new techniques and implemented new technologies in both manual and automation testing. Automation testing was something brand new to me, but learning from my peers and seeing it in practice gave me the confidence to use it in my everyday testing.
The thing I like the most about working with the NHSBSA Digital team is their thirst for knowledge and the way they encourage you to develop as an individual. You work as part of the team and learn from the best in the business, but you also get allocated time to work on your own projects, train and learn new skills. I love it.
My confidence grew and grew so that when a Test Analyst role became available, I felt comfortable applying. It was a big step for me, but I knew that I was ready to showcase my skills and move forward. Just applying and being interviewed for the role made me feel that I had really progressed, but when I heard I got the job; I was over the moon!
I don’t feel that I would have progressed so far or so quickly if I hadn’t been working with the Digital team at NHSBSA. Everyone guided me so well that I felt ready and confident to apply for this role. Starting as a junior tester and moving into a Test Analyst role in that short space of time felt like a huge accomplishment and very exciting.
I can’t wait to see what the future brings.
